Introduction
Welcome to the Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tools (RePORT) Expenditures and Results (RePORTER) module. RePORTER is an upgraded version of CRISP that provides enhanced searching capabilities and access to the results (publications and patents) of both intramural and extramural projects funded by NIH. It also links to related information in other databases such as the National Library of Medicine’s Medline. RePORTER provides access to records of projects funded each year from fiscal year 1986 to the present. The query form allows the user to generate queries by entering terms or making fielded selections. The results of the query are returned in a project listing that includes the project number, subproject identifier (if applicable), project title, Contact PI / Project Leader, performing organization, fiscal year of funding, NIH administering and funding Institutes and Centers (IC), and the fiscal year total costs provided by each funding IC. The project number, subproject id, and the project title are clickable and linked to more detailed information on several Project Information pages: Description, the science being conducted; Detail, administrative and budget details on the project; Results, the publications and patents associated with the project; History, past years’ project information; and Subprojects (for multi-project grants only), all of the component subprojects. |

Query
Form: This form allows users to generate queries by entering specific search criteria. Search terms can be entered to find specific words or phrases in a project’s title, abstract, or scientific terms, and other criteria can be selected from checkbox lists. The Submit button initiates the search and the Clear button resets the query form. The "View Projects by NIH Category" link provides users direct access to a table of funding estimates for several categories of research, conditions, and diseases. |

Projects: A successful query will generate a "hit list" that provides information about the projects that satisfy the selected search criteria. A hit list is another term for the search results. Project number, Subproject number (if available), Project Title, Principal Investigator, Organization, FY, Admin IC, Funding IC and FY Total Cost by IC are displayed on the Hit List page. Project Number and Project Title are in link format. Project Title is linked to the Description tab of the Project Information page, which provides information on the science being conducted. Project Number is linked to the Details tab of the Project Information page, which provides administrative information, such as the PI name and organization, original solicitation number, and the study section that reviewed the proposal. |

Publications: A successful query will generate a hit list of publications citing support from the projects that satisfy the selected search criteria. Core project number, publication title, name of the journal, names of authors, and links to related publications in PubMed and Google Scholar are included in the list of publications. Title, Journal, and Author columns are sortable by clicking on the column headings. Titles link to the full-text article in PubMed Central (if available) and the publication citation links to the publication abstract in PubMed. |

Patents: A successful query will generate a hit list of patents citing support from the projects that satisfy the selected search criteria. Core project number, patent number, and patent title are included in the list of patents. The Title column is sortable by clicking on the column heading. Titles link to the full-text article in US Patent & Trademark Office, Patent Full Text and Image Database (if available). |

Data and Visualize: A successful query will generate graphical charts as a way to represent the projects that satisfy the selected search criteria. Users can choose to chart their search results using the following variables: "Fiscal Year", "Funding Mechanism", "Administering Institute/Center", and "Activity Code ". A Summary Table of Funding Data will sit alongside all graphs to support the results with information on the number of (parent) projects, subprojects and the funding associated with each. Users can Export summary table data to an Excel file.

Clinical Studies: A successful query will generate a hit list of clinical trial studies for the projects that satisfy the selected search criteria. Core project number, ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier, Study, and Study Status are included in the list. All columns are sortable by clicking on the column heading. Titles of studies link to the full-text article in ClinicalTrials.gov (if available).

Project Information Page: This tabbed page provides a Description of the project: an abstract, its public health relevance (if available), a list of any NIH spending categories into which the project falls, and scientific terms associated with the project. A second tab provides administrative Details including a list of all co-investigators, institutional address, and budgetary information. The Results tab provides a list of publications and patents resulting from the project, the History tab provides project records for all years of the project, and the Subprojects tab provides a list of all subprojects (multi-project research grants only). |

Activity Code: A 3-character code, applied to various funding mechanisms to identify a specific category of extramural research activity. A comprehensive list of activity codes currently in use may be found on the Types of Grant Programs Web page.
Several major groupings of activities and some commonly-used activity codes may be selected in RePORTER. The major groupings are: |

Map: A successful query will generate a map with the first 500 research organizations in the hit list represented by a 'balloon' icon. Users can click on this icon to display the project number and title. A subsequent click here on the project number opens the Project Details page and a click on project title opens the Project Description page.

Agency/Institute or Center (IC): The NIH component responsible for administering the research grant or contract (Admin IC) or funding (Funding IC) the research. Admin is selected by default. Please note that Funding IC data is only available for NIH projects funded.

Institute or Center (Admin IC): RePORTER provides the ability to search for either all projects administered by one or more ICs, or to find all projects funded by one or more ICs. |

Award Type: From the standard award types, RePORTER has created four groupings: New (type 1s), Competing Renewal (types 2, 4, and 9), Noncompeting (types 7 and 9), and Revision or Supplement (type 3). |

Congressional District: A territorial division of a state from which a member of the United States House of Representatives is elected. The congressional district to which each grant is assigned is based on the business address of the grantee organization or contractor, not the actual performance site of the research being performed. |

Department: Academic department within an institution of higher education. |

Fiscal Year (FY): Active Projects: Unless specified, RePORTER searches for the most recent record of projects that have not yet reached their end date (in the case of extramural grants and contracts) or intramural projects from the most recent annual reports from the NIH intramural programs (information on intramural projects is updated in RePORTER at the close of each fiscal year). This means that the results of "Active Projects" searches may include projects awarded in an earlier fiscal year that are still active (e.g., extramural awards in a no-cost extension period) or not yet updated by the end-of-year intramural project report. RePORTER contains records of projects funded over the last 25 fiscal years.
Prior Years: Searches conducted on fiscal years prior to the current year will produce lists of only those awards funded in the chosen fiscal year. |

Funding Institute or Center (Funding IC): The IC(s) providing funding for a project. RePORTER provides the ability to search for either all projects administered by one or more ICs, or to find all projects funded by one or more ICs. |

Funding Mechanism: The options in RePORTER include the major mechanism categories used in NIH budget mechanism tables for the President’s budget. |

FY Total Cost by IC: Total project funding by an Institute or Center for a given fiscal year. |

Educational Institution Type: A major entity within an institution of higher education, such as a School of Medicine or School of Dentistry.

NIH Spending Category: One of several historically-reported categories of diseases, conditions, or research areas. Available for fiscal years 2008 and onward, based on a computerized process the NIH uses at the end of each fiscal year to categorize research projects. Projects by Spending Category for each fiscal year are made available the following fiscal year as part of the next President’s Budget request. Only projects administered by NIH are organized into spending categories. Projects of other agencies are not included. RePORTER provides up-to-date award information, including modifications made after the close of each fiscal year. As a result, project listings and award amounts may not match exactly the official year-end NIH Categorical Spending reports at https://report.nih.gov/categorical_spending.aspx |

Organization: A generic term used to refer to an educational institution or other entity, including an individual, which applies for or receives an NIH grant, contract, or cooperative agreement. |

Principal Investigator: An individual designated by the grantee to direct the project or activity being supported by the grant. He or she is responsible and accountable to the grantee and NIH for the proper conduct of the project or activity. Also known as Program Director or Project Director. The % wildcard may be used for both Last name and First name fields, if only part of the name is known. |

Project Number: Commonly referred to as a grant number or contract number. For grants, this unique identification number is composed of the type code, activity code, Institute/Center code, serial number, support year, and/or suffix code. For RePORTER searches, the ‘%’ wildcard may be used at the beginning or end of your entry into this field if only a portion of the project number is known. To limit query time, it is recommended to select the fiscal year of the project if known. |

Project Title: Title of the research project as found on the research grant or contract award. |

Public
Health Relevance: Submitted as part of a grant application, this statement articulates a project's potential to improve public health. This query field in RePORTER is used to search public health relevance statements for matching text. Public health relevance statements are unavailable for some years and funding mechanisms. |

Project Start Date: Date the project began. |
| |
Project End Date: Date the project ended. |

Award Notice Date: Date on which the award notice was issued. The award notice is the legally binding document that notifies the grantee that an award has been made, contains all terms and conditions of the award, and documents the obligation of Federal funds. |

NIH Recovery Act Projects: Research projects funded, entirely or in part, with funds appropriated under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. |

FOA(Funding Opportunity Announcement) : RePORTER provides the ability to search for projects originally solicited under a request for applications (RFA), program announcement (PA), or notice (NOT) issued in the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts. RFA numbers take the format RFA-IC-fy-nnn, where IC is the Agency/Institute/Center issuing the RFA, fy is the fiscal year of the solicitation, and nnn is a serial number. PA numbers are formatted as PA-fy-nnn and notices NOT-IC-fy-nnn. |

State: Geographical location (state) of awarded projects. |

Study Section: A group responsible for the review of grant applications in an area of science. Study sections are grouped into larger Integrated Review Groups (IRGs). Study section codes and rosters of current study sections can be found at https://www.csr.nih.gov/Committees/rosterindex.asp. |

Subproject Number (Sub #): A unique number assigned to a subproject on a multi–project research
grant. |

Term Search: Text search of project titles,
abstracts, and scientific terms. If the "And" logic is selected
(the default), RePORTER finds projects in which all of the search terms are
found within the title, abstract, or scientific terms. If the
"Or" logic is used, RePORTER finds projects that contain at least
one of the terms entered. For example, using the default "And"
search, a search on brain disorder will retrieve projects with both
"brain" and "disorder" in their title, abstract, or
scientific terms. Changing the logic to "Or" will retrieve
all projects with either "brain" or "disorder" in these fields. Use quotes
around the entered text to search for exact phrases.
The following reserved words should not be used as keywords for term search.
